ORCHID CATTLEYA (Bc.) YELLOW BIRD

Cattleya orchids, often called the “Queen of Orchids,” are renowned for their large, vibrant, and fragrant flowers. With over 50 species and numerous hybrids, Cattleyas display a diverse range of colors and patterns, including shades of purple, pink, white, and yellow. Native to tropical regions of Central and South America, these epiphytic orchids thrive in warm, humid environments. Their showy blooms, often borne on tall spikes, make them highly prized among orchid enthusiasts and are frequently used in corsages and floral arrangements. Cattleya orchids require careful cultivation, including specific light, temperature, and humidity conditions, making them a beloved challenge for dedicated growers.

How To Care

Light: Cattleya orchids thrive in bright, indirect light. They need around 4-6 hours of sunlight daily, but avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch their leaves.

Water: Water your Cattleya thoroughly when the potting medium is nearly dry, typically every 5-7 days.  Water early in the day to allow foliage to dry before nightfall.

Fertilizer: Feed the plant regularly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced orchid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce or cease fertilization during the dormant season (fall and winter).

Temperature: Maintain temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) during the day and slightly cooler at night.

Potting:  Cattleyas thrive in a loose, well-draining potting medium such as orchid bark mix or sphagnum moss. Repot them every 1-2 years, preferably after flowering, using fresh medium.

Pruning: Remove spent flower spikes after blooming and trim any dead or yellowing leaves to promote new growth.
